A severely neglected dog found in a dumpster in Bridgeport is getting a second chance at life thanks to someone who calls herself a 'crazy dog lady.'
News 12 first met Lottie in November after the nonprofit Red Leash Rescue stepped in to help. Lottie was found by Bridgeport Animal Control tossed away after years of neglect.
"Just thrown out in the trash," says Jaye Markwell of Winsted. "How could somebody do that?"
Markwell recently added Lottie to her family. She has a history of taking in senior dogs and making sure their last years are filled with love.
"I try, I try," says Markwell. "We've had quite a few come through these doors."
Lottie was found matted, covered in feces and blind. She needed her eyes and remaining teeth removed and couldn't really walk at first.
When Red Leash Rescue shared Lottie's story on social media, Markwell says she fell in love.
"The minute I saw her I fell in love," says Markwell. "Even before she was cleaned and shaved and all the mats taken off of her I was in love."
Markwell adopted Lottie last month, giving dogs Harry and Lu a new sibling.
"She gets along great here," says Markwell. "She's on the go, sniffing it all out."
Lottie is getting plenty of affection in her new home.
Lottie's age is not known but the guess is between 11 and 14.
Bridgeport Animal Control is still trying to find out who Lottie's owner was. If that person is found, animal cruelty charges are expected.
