For the first time in 15 years, NYCHA is accepting new wait list applications for the Section 8 Housing Voucher Program.
The last time the Section 8 wait list was open was 2009. New Yorkers have a 6-day window to apply before it closes once again. Applications will be accepted between June 3 and June 9. Once it closes, 200,000 applicants will be selected for the wait list.
Officials say it will work like a lottery, meaning everyone will have an equal chance regardless of when they apply. To qualify, a household must have a gross income of 50% or below the area median income. If approved and accepted into the program, participants can expect to contribute 30% of their monthly gross income toward rent.
Those interested can apply online or visit a NYCHA office to request a paper application. NYCHA says that a new waitlist will be established on August 1 - the same day that applicants will be notified to check their application status.
