The South Bronx is taking outdoor dining to the next level, with a portion of Alexander Avenue closing this Labor Day weekend for expanded in-street eats.
Alexander Avenue between Bruckner Boulevard and 134th Street is a busy stretch for vehicles, but that will change this holiday weekend.
Third Avenue BID CEO Michael Brady says the shutdown will be from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The pedestrian-only zone will allow restaurants to expand their current sidewalk and street dining even further. Labor Day weekend is a trial run and they hope to do it every weekend after.
Volunteers helped put together the outdoor dining system Thursday, installing platforms and planters with plexiglass to keep diners safe.
"We hope to really bring it to other neighborhoods as a way to stabilize our neighborhood economies but also really help the small businesses that are struggling," says Brady.
Brady says they're hoping to do the same setup in the Melrose and Westchester areas next.
