Over 511 flights were impacted at John F. Kennedy International Airport as severe weather rolled through New York City on Sunday night.

According to Flight Aware, flights were grounded, diverted and canceled as heavy rain and winds made for dangerous conditions in the air and tarmac at JFK and LaGuardia Airport.

The majority of the diverted or canceled flights were from the New York area and other East Coast cities that included Boston, Washington, D.C., Atlanta as well as flights from the Midwest region like Chicago.

According to the FAA, flights were grounded from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. due to severe thunderstorm risks at both JFK and LaGuardia as well as Newark Liberty International Airport with ground delays in effect until Monday 1 a.m.

The weather also impacted international flights, including delays to connections that had one New York area family's vacation plans in Europe up in the air.

"We have a flight to Lithuania with a connection in Poland. Our plane has been significantly delayed, so we're going to miss our connection flight. We might be stuck here or in Poland," said Long Island resident Heather Brickman.
