The NYPD says shootings and shooting victims are the lowest in recorded city history, despite a violent week in the Bronx.
In the first eight months of the year, city data recorded 489 shooting incidents and 611 shooting victims, with major crime down by 6.7% citywide in August 2025 compared to the same time last year.
The numbers follow a particularly violent stretch in the Bronx, where gunfire rang out across the borough. From Aug. 25 to Aug. 31, 13 people were reported to be victims of shootings according to NYPD data.
Despite the bloodshed, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the Bronx experienced less shootings in August than in the previous year, with the number of victims down by 20% across the borough.
The commissioner says the incidents in the Bronx appear to be gang related.
In response, the city deployed 1,000 officers patrol hotspot zones known to trigger pullers on Aug. 28.
A Bronx mother says the statistics do not make her feel comforted.
"Even when we're in the house we have to decipher between firecrackers and gunshots, so that's already self-explanatory in itself," said Bre, who lives near Saint James Park.
Others say that perception is not reality.
"I know shootings go on but It's not excessive like what people may be thinking, I don't see too many crimes like in other countries," said Leslie, who lives in Fordham.
More than 1,000 new police officer recruits joined the force in August, the largest class of sworn in officers by the NYPD since January 2016.
The NYPD says it is on track to hire the largest number of new officers in recorded history.
