After taking home the season 19 title on NBC's "The Voice," Shoreham's Carter Rubin was celebrated by his community.
Rubin and his mother had only flown in from Los Angeles Friday morning, and he was immediately greeted with congratulations, which included a milelong car parade. He also was presented a proclamation from Legislator Sarah Anker.
"During this time of challenge with COVID, we need happiness," says Anker. "We need something to cheer about."
Rubin, who won the show at just 15 years old, serenaded News 12 outside his Shoreham home. He's the youngest male winner of the singing competition, which landed him $100,000 and a recording contract.
He's no stranger to News 12 either, after winning our Sounds of the Season competition just two years ago.
Carter's mother says she fell to her knees when she found out her son won.
"It was amazing to watch my little kid just follow his dream. It was awesome," she says. "This is something that he wanted to do for so long and to be able to do it, especially now with this pandemic and craziness going on, we were just so happy that it happened."
Carter says the win feels like a dream.
"I feel like my feet haven't touched the ground yet," says Rubin. "It was insane. It was a dream come true working with Gwen (Stefani). I had my heart set on her coming up for me. Just to work with her is a dream, and now it's like she's a friend."
When the craziness of his win calms down a bit, Rubin says he will focus on writing songs.
