Suffolk County police announced Thursday they plan to reinstall ShotSpotter technology in several communities this spring.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison testified in front of the Legislature's Public Safety Committee and said ShotSpotter will be present in Bay Shore, Brentwood, Central Islip, Coram, Huntington Station, Mastic, North Amityville, Bellport and Wyandanch come May.
"I also am well-aware that ShotSpotter was out here in Suffolk County maybe three or four years ago, five years ago, and maybe it wasn't the best type of technology. I'm telling you it works, sir,” he said.
Harrison added public meetings will be held in those communities prior to the rollout to explain what the crime-fighting technology will mean for residents.
