Dangerous cold is moving into Long Island this weekend, with temperatures expected to dip into the single digits and wind chills falling below zero.

Despite the frigid forecast, some kids are still eager to get outside.

“I have a sweatshirt, I have a jacket, I have sweatpants, I have gloves, I have a hat,” one child told News 12, adding that snowball fights with his brother are on the agenda.

Northwell Health physician Dr. Chidubem Iloabachie says early warning signs of cold-related illness, include shivering and a burning sensation in the hands or feet.

“That’s your first sign that it’s probably time to go inside,” Iloabachie said.

Doctors recommend dressing in layers, covering exposed skin and limiting time outdoors during extreme cold. He also warns that cold weather can be deadly, particularly during strenuous activity.

County officials report five shoveling-related deaths so far this winter, including one in Nassau County and four in Suffolk County.

Whether you’re sledding, skating or shoveling, taking frequent breaks and bundling up properly can help prevent serious injury.
