Nitro, one of Six Flags Great Adventure's signature roller coasters, has been temporarily closed after Six Flags announced it is shutting down similar rides nationwide following a fatal guest incident at Six Flags Over Georgia.
A spokesperson for Six Flags said the company is "deeply saddened" by the incident in Georgia and is working with local authorities as the investigation continues. According to reports, one person died and several others were injured on the coaster in Austell, Georgia, about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta.
"We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest's family, friends and loved ones," the company said in a statement.
The Six Flags spokesperson said park employees and emergency responders acted immediately and that the company is providing support to guests and team members affected by the incident.
While officials have not released additional details about what occurred in Georgia, Six Flags confirmed that it has temporarily closed similar attractions across its parks, including Nitro at Great Adventure.
"Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks," the statement said. "The safety of our guests and associates remains one of our highest priorities."
A spokesperson for Six Flags Great Adventure said the park plans to move forward with its annual Fright Fest event later this week, but it is not yet known when Nitro or the other affected rides will reopen.
