The city's Department of Sanitation is showing off its snow-fighting tools before the winter weather really kicks into gear.

This will be the city's first season using liquid brine on highway interchanges and exit-entrance ramps. The DSNY is expanding its arsenal to suppress ice and snow accumulation in very cold temperatures.

Anti-icing brine is something new this season. The units carry up to 300 gallons of saltwater solutions- sprayed from nozzles to prevent ice and snow accumulation.

Sanitation's fleet consisted of plow trucks, front-end loaders for deep snow, skid steers for tiny streets and melters for significant snowfall. All of the vehicles are equipped with turn-by-turn navigation to help drivers plow all streets, even when signs may be obscured in hazardous conditions.

Officials say New Yorkers should report complaints to 311 and use plow NYC to track the city's plows.

More than 300,000 tons of salt are ready to go. "We have gotten a lot more sophisticated in terms of the technology we are using with the algorithms to make sure when we say that street has been plowed we have that data," said DSNY Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.

"We need to keep New York City open. It's the Gotham of the free world. It's where everyone wants to be," said director of Bureau Cleaning and Collection Edward Grayson.

Now, something that may surprise many is that the city's Department of Sanitation starts prepping for snow when it's still hot out- in the middle of the summer- in order to be ready for this time of the year.
