Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants all workers from private companies back in the office by Labor Day.
But the proposal is getting mixed reviews among Long Islanders.
"We need people coming back. We can do it safely. We can do it smarter," Cuomo said. "Let's pick Labor Day as a date."
The announcement took many by surprise as the delta variant is driving infections up again. But Cuomo said with vaccination rates rising, New York has to get its economic engine running again and called on private companies to bring workers back.
"It's not just about your business. It's about all the spinoff economic activity that your workers bring to the surrounding community," Cuomo said.
During the pandemic, remote working grew in popularity - and many workers think it's a great option over being in an office situation.
"It is tough to say because now with the delta variant, I'm a little reluctant," said Kristen Panoiu, of Bellmore.
There are some Long Islanders who told News 12 they are ready to get back into the office as long as it's done safely.
"I feel comfortable enough to go back," said Jen Estevez, who works at an Amityville law office.
"I think we should have all been back in the office over a year ago," said Casey Thomas, of Credit Repair in Lindenhurst.
Medical experts say to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, but that people should be safe back in an office situation if they are following basic precautions.
"If you are vaccinated and you wear a mask, you are absolutely safe to go back to work," said Dr. David Battinelli, of Northwell Health.
Masks indoors may not be a popular option, but Cuomo said New York has to start somewhere and be a leader.
"There is no tomorrow if we don't act today," Cuomo said.
