A street renaming was held in Melrose Monday for a South Bronx community activist who died from cancer last year.
Elected officials joined community members to rename the intersection of East 158th Street and Cauldwell Avenue to Grace Maldonado Way.
Maldonado was the NYCHA Tenant Association president at the South Bronx Area Site 402, and she advocated for accessible green space in the Bronx, particularly a community garden.
“My mom was known to a lot of people as ‘Mom’, ‘Mami Grace’, and anybody who had the experience of being around my mom was very fortunate to feel real love, because that’s all that woman had to give,” said Maldonado's son, Eric.
