Welcome back to state of our schools. A US federal judge has ruled that the deferred action for childhood arrivals program also known as DACA is illegal. It's a decision that impacts hundreds of thousands of people all across the country. That program was first put into place back in 2012 to protect Children brought to the US illegally. In 2021 a federal judge in Texas deemed it unconstitutional. Now two years later, he has made that decision again despite revisions from the Biden administration, while the judge did note that the federal government is not required to take action against any current DACA recipients. It is still getting a lot of pushback from immigration advocacy groups. The move has some residents upset as well. Poor little Children. A lot of times their parents bring them over illegally and sometimes they're not even accompanied by a parent. What do you do to a child like that? They're probably afraid already, the Biden administration is expected to appeal the decision, crosswalks at schools near you could be getting safer for Children to walk in. It comes after a push from some Brooklyn officials and safety advocates they're trying to pass a bill which would turn all crossings near schools in our city into scramble crosswalks. That means traffic in all direct would stop while people are crossing the street. Brooklyn Assemblyman, Brian Cunningham says that too many students have been killed or suffered lifelong injuries because of dangerous drivers. He's calling on the State Assembly to pass that bill before more Children are hurt or killed. History has been made at Sunni Maritime College as a brand new state of the art training ship will now have a permanent home here in our city. The US Department of Transportation Maritime Administration designed that ship to take the maritime industry into the future. News. Twelve's Marissa Marcelino has the story. The Empire State seven officially has a whole port here in the Bronx. It's developed as part of the US DOT S Maritime Administration with their National Security multi mission vessel program designed to propel the industry into the future. The age of the vessels that we were using were such that our young were not training on state of the art. They were using a vessel here at Sunni Maritime. That was almost 60 years old. The ship includes a full training bridge room for 600 cadets to learn a helipad and hospital facilities for disaster relief missions. College President Michael Altes says it will transform the curriculum and the workforce. It's going to complete revolution the way we teach and train here. We have facilities here that we've never had before. So it's really make us rethink our entire program. And needless to say the students are excited for their new tapped out toy, it changes the game completely. Like we went from, you know, good old pirates on the sea to, you know, intergalactic space travel, Massachusetts, Maine, Texas and California will also get these new training vessels in the future. Captain Morgan mcmanus is proud New York received the first. You'll be able to see it going over the throgs neck of the bridge or up here on campus. The college says public tours of the ship will begin in the near future. So you may even have the chance to go on board and explore at Suny Maritime College. The C MA Foundation has recognized stand out teachers across the country who make a positive impact on students through music. One of this year's recipients is the only teacher in New York to receive this award and he teaches is in Brooklyn, Mister Ryan Mack of PS 10 has been awarded the honor for the change that he's making in the community through music. He says he strives to make his classroom an inclusive and creative space where students can use music to express themselves. I think we all really needed that sort of win that, that sort of validation of what we're doing matters. It has purpose, you know, and it benefits our community. And so the fact that the students could attribute that to their own accomplishments as well as my own kind of helped create that bond. And Mr Mack plans to keep that award on display in the classroom, as he says, that award is equally his students as it is his a wonderful mindset. The Department of Education awarded the Bronx Charter School for Excellence to with a national blue ribbon award. The K through eight school says it's being recognized as an exemplary high performing school for having standardized test scores in the top 15% of New York State. They credit their rigorous curriculum, coaching and hands on family communication for their success. The co principal told us her reaction when hearing the news that her school achieved that blue ribbon excitement, um feeling like all that hard work and all the things that parents and scholars are doing every day is is being recognized and so it felt really great. The school also has a team dedicated to placing students in high schools while also highlighting the importance of college early on. We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month here on News 12 and we're highlighting a student who's breaking barriers and making a positive impact at his school campus right here at home or Mejia is a junior at the College of Mount ST Vincent, as well as the student body president and a proud Dominican taking on the responsibility of leading a campus is not easy, but says there is always something positive to look forward to every day in the role, my passion, I love helping others. I love being there for other people. And ever since I started doing government, it's just been a great reason to wake up every day during those challenges, says that he might not know what his future holds yet, but he believes there is beauty in the unknown. And he's just hoping to continue to inspire people on campus and also around the Bronx and beyond. Look out Hollywood, the future of production is being molded right here at home and we're getting a preview of the program behind it. All students in the media and digital film production program at Bronx Community College are getting that hands on experience on everything TV and film to prepare for a career in the industry. One of those students sharing his success story, getting an opportunity to intern at Silver Cup Studios. That's one of the largest film and television production facilities in New York City. I was lost. And this program has steered me into a path that made me more of an adult by giving me uh a purpose and that purpose is branch off into my personal life and made it better. A film festival is set to be held on campus, a chance for students to showcase all that hard work in just a few minutes. Department of Education. Data shows that in 2022 only 11% of Bronx students in grades 3 to 8 scored the highest score on state tests for English and language arts. That's the lowest percentage in our city followed by Brooklyn with 23%. Manhattan has the highest at 30 in Noel's Book News. 12 is talking to local authors and community leaders who are changing our boroughs. One book at a time. It's Halloween season. So I was wondering what was the first book you remember really scaring you for me? It was it by Stephen King. I'm still scared of clowns to this day. But for Latona Devon from Bronx bound books, it was another Stephen King favorite pet cemetery. I speak to her about how a love of literature was passed down through her family to her Children today. What is a neighborhood without a bookstore? It's a question latanya Devon asked herself many times in 2016 when the Bronx lost its only bookstore at the time. People love to like um talk about, well, Barnes and Noble left Barnes and Noble left and I'm like, well, they didn't want to be here let's do something about it. So, do something she did in 2019. Inspired by a friend and her school teacher, Grandmother Devon opened Bronx Bound books, a bookstore on wheels. She showed me a bookmobile based out of uh Maryland. And that's where the idea came. It was a truck, but I knew that I didn't want a truck. I knew I wanted to have it in a bus. The book bus has become a familiar site in the Bronx from hospitals to schools with fellow bookworm and bus driver, Mister Jerry behind the wheel. Uh The goal is for the kids to be able to pick up at least three books, a book that they know they're gonna love a book that they're curious about. And then your third book would be a book by an author that you've never read. Growing up, Devon witnessed her grandmother read important documents for neighbors who couldn't. I walk into my living room and she was there reading, let's say a lease or a prescription literacy was something that I knew was, you know, something powerful. Something she hopes to teach young readers through Bronx Bound books. Borrowing books are great. I'm not against libraries but just something different about owning your books, being able to go to it whenever you want to. And with October being National Book Month, Devon is excited to give the book mobile a permanent home at a kiosk at the Bay Plaza mall, passing her love of reading down to her own kids. My six year old, he wrote a book uh this week and he's like, I really want to sell this book, but I don't wanna compete with you. Do you think there's a way we can work together going back there where Barnes and Noble left us? It's a full circle moment for me. And if you want to celebrate National Book Month, try Latona. Scary suggestion just in time for Halloween Pet Cemetery by Stephen King follows a family in a spooky Maine town where creatures come back from the dead Amanda. Oh, I'm spooked out already. No, I can't wait to read it. Thank you. A learning center right here in Brooklyn is teaching infants and toddlers sign language before they can even speak their first words. It's part of the learning curriculum at the learning experience where these Children can already sign words like please and more the center says, learning sign language serves as a bridge to help Children. Let others know what they need that moment and then be able to speak it as they get older. The sign language curriculum is offered at all 13. The learning experience locations across Brooklyn. So cool, adorable and educational.
