State Sen. Monica Martinez asked New York City Mayor Eric Adams whether Nassau Coliseum could be a place he is looking to send migrants.
Martinez, who represents the 4th District, had an exchange with the mayor in Albany on Wednesday.
"It was reported that New York City is looking into Nassau Coliseum as a potential housing for our asylum seekers," Martinez said. "Is that part of the New York City plan?"
Adams told Martinez he does not know if the Nassau Coliseum is being talked about formally as a place to house migrants currently in the city.
However, he says with close to 47,000 migrants in the five boroughs, there needs to be what he calls a decompression strategy in New York state to help with the influx of migrants.
Adams says if Nassau Coliseum came up as an option for migrants, he would first communicate with local officials about it.
"If we were to do an initiative in one of the local municipalities in the area, we're going to communicate with the local elected officials to share what we are doing," says Mayor Adams.
Martinez says officials should figure out how to help families coming from other countries seeking asylum.
"This is a humanitarian issue, we have to remember that these are people and unfortunately the fear mongering from people on other sides that don't agree with this instill emotions in people," says Martinez.
Martinez says housing migrants at the Coliseum would put a strain on Long Island's resources.
"We have so many not-for-profits that try to help immigrants and migrants that they've exhausted their resources and therefore we also need to help them, if this is the case."
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakemen told News 12 in a statement, "It would be viewed by the county as a violation of the lease if the Coliseum were used for housing."
