Thousands of people gathered Sunday for the annual Ferragosto festival.

More than 20,000 people crammed along Arthur Avenue for the festival that is filled with food, cigars, music and more.

Ferragosto dates back centuries and recognizes a tradition of enjoying the fruits of labor as harvest season comes to an end.

The gathering first occurred in 18 B.C. when the Ancient Roman festival honored Emperor Caesar Augustus.

In the Bronx, the festival has become a way for families to come together and bond over Italy's culture.

Peter's Meat Market creates one of the signature elements of the celebration – the aroma. The business says that the festival is one of the most important days of the year for them.

The festival not only celebrated Italian culture, but locally, community members celebrated 100 years of Arthur Avenue.
