Bronx residents came together Monday in West Farms to honor soldiers that served our country.
Although many may not have known the soldiers buried at West Farms Soldier Cemetery, they still used the day off as a day of service.
"I'm just honored to say I am a veteran and to help especially those who aren't with us anymore," said veteran Efrain Gonzalez III.
About 20 people volunteered at the cemetery on Monday. It is maintained by the Parks Department, but every year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day the "Loving The Bronx" organization leads a cleanup.
The first burial at the cemetery dates back to 1815. Some of the headstones are unreadable, but the soldier's service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
