Hospitals to transfer postpartum moms after giving birth as a safeguard

Some postpartum patients are being transferred to a Northwell facility in Bay Shore.
Mom-to-be Kelley Fini, of Seaford, says she envisioned a very different way of bringing her first baby into the world. Her family has been holed up in their house since the pandemic began. She has a May 25 due date at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.
That hospital, like many others, is moving new moms within four hours of giving birth to make room for COVID-19 patients. Moms and babies will be moved to designated satellite locations, while significant others can stay for about two hours after delivery, but won't be allowed to go with or visit the satellite location.
Huntington and Southside hospitals are moving new moms and babies to a medical building in Bay Shore, where there are 17 private rooms as well as a large space that can be sectioned off.
"In the interest of safety and well-being of our mothers and babies -- getting these patients out of the hospital environment, which is basically these hospitals are becoming COVID hospitals, we feel is the best strategy," says Dr. Mitchell Kramer, OBGYN chairman at Huntington Hospital.
