The pandemic is taking a toll on New York City’s first responders and MTA employees.

Both departments have seen an increase in sick calls, but insist they’re taking precautions to keep their employees safe.

The numbers continue to rise, and more workers are testing positive.

As of Tuesday, 2,006 NYPD officers and 3,038 civilian members have tested positive for COVID-19. The number of officers out sick is also rising.

The MTA is also dealing with the same situation, they have more than 1,000 employees who tested positive. Over 5,000 workers remain quarantined, unfortunately losing 33 members to coronavirus.

The police department alongside the MTA have taken drastic measures to help slow down the spread. Service has been reduced and officers are continuing to tackle social distancing in communities.

Both departments continue to emphasize the importance to keep these workers safe.

The MTA says it's handing out more masks, gloves and sanitizing products for all employees working on the buses, rails, bridges and tunnels, as well as the MTA Police Department.

The police department is asking anyone with extra masks or supplies to donate them to first responders or to hospitals.
