The first teacher who died of COVID-19 in New York City has had a street renamed in her honor.
Sandra Santos-Vizcaino was an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who taught third grade at Brooklyn's P.S. 9. Family members described her as a dedicated teacher who went above and beyond for her students. Her death in 2020 devastated the community.
Santos-Vizcaino’s family and friends gathered with elected officials at corner of 4th Avenue and 57th Street to rename it in tribute to her.
"All of Brooklyn will know who she was and the legacy she left behind,” said Councilmember Alexa Aviles.
Santos-Vizcaino’s children had the opportunity to speak before the shield came off the street sign. They said this honor is like the hall of fame for their mother and are happy she will be remembered for her dedication to the community.
