4ds agoThe city introduced a plan to roll out student OMNY cards on Thursday.
Eligible students will be able to have cards for the start of the school year.
The initiative will replace the current student MetroCards, eliminating the current restrictions that the cards are programmed to. Students will be able to ride for free four times a day and can use the cards 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The removal of these restrictions will help students avoid paying the costs of extra transfers and give them more chances to explore the five boroughs.
Mayor Eric Adams since this initiative will also help the city tackle fare evasion-- a problem they have been dealing with in recent months.
"That is a significant amount of money when you're talking about collective, how you're going to pay for lunch money, how you're going to get the basic things that a family needs," said Mayor Adams.
