New York City Mayor Eric Adams is applauding a decrease in subway crime for seven straight months, but statistics in the Bronx specifically paint a different picture.
NYPD data shows the Bronx has seen nearly 40 more crimes on the transit system so far in 2024, when compared to the same time frame last year. Police report 218 transit crimes in the borough since the start of the year. During the same time in 2023, the Bronx had 190 cases. While overall subway crime citywide has seen a drop this year, commuters in the Bronx say that’s not how they feel on board.
"The subways are actually really terrifying to be honest, said Kristina Verderosa, of Hunts Point. "I've been assaulted multiple times. Somebody tried to set me on fire."
In the last 28 days, the NYPD reports 31 transit crimes within the Bronx, averaging out to more than one crime a day.
