Suffolk PD: Suspected burglar shot after breaking into NYPD detective’s home

Suffolk police say a burglar was possibly attempting to break into homes on 5th Avenue, and then got into one. The homeowner, an off-duty NYPD detective, was inside the home, Suffolk police say.

An apparent attempted burglary in West Babylon ended in gunfire overnight with the suspected intruder shot by the homeowner.
Suffolk police say a burglar was possibly attempting to break into homes on 5th Avenue, and then got into one. The homeowner, an off-duty NYPD detective, was inside the home, Suffolk police say.
Suffolk police say the off-duty detective shot the intruder after a confrontation. Police say the homeowner called 911 and the wounded intruder was taken to an area hospital.
The suspect is expected to survive.
Police say there were other family members in the home, including children when the intruder broke in. The intruder is expected to be charged with attempted burglary at a later date.
The NYPD has also been informed of the shooting by one of their detectives.
