A local organization in Sunset Park helped the immigrant community get the COVID-19 vaccine Monday.

Mixteca is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to empower the Latinx community. It say it wants to make sure the Spanish-speaking community receives the vaccine.

"Latinx community, as you know, has been one of the hardest hit and we want to make sure that we are one of the first communities to get vaccinated," said Lorena Kourousia, executive director of Mixteca.

The nonprofit also called on the city and state health departments to make it easier for non-English speakers to access the vaccine.

The workers from three different restaurants and stores who closed their doors boarded buses and headed to Medgar Evers College to receive their vaccines. The organization also ensured everything was in place so that they could get vaccinated.

"We make sure they have their ID, they have their eligibility requirements and we're going to be there with all of them," Kourousia said.

Mixteca said it has been inundated with calls since the start of the pandemic but was eager to people who wanted to get the vaccine get inoculated.
