Sheldon Johnson, the suspect in a grisly Highbridge killing, pleaded not guilty and is staying in custody, officials say.

Johnson was charged with murder after a man's severed torso was found in an apartment Tuesday.

Johnson has been denied bail. Police say he has a long rap sheet, including an attempted murder charge from 2006.

The victim was identified as 44-year-old Collin Smalls. Surveillance video from the apartment shows video of a man, who police say is Johnson, going in and out of the elevator multiple times.

The district attorney's office also argued he was the only person seen on the surveillance video at the time of Smalls' killing.

It's unclear what Johnson's relation to Smalls was, but the superintendent of the building says he has seen them together before.

Johnson is due back in court Monday.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story said Johnson was charged with murder in 2006. He was charged with attempted murder.
