The United Bodegas of America is demanding safety improvements and help from public officials after two recent shootings in New York City.
The organization released a statement listing the need for panic buttons connected to law enforcement, mandatory prison sentences for offenders illegally carrying guns, as well as the legal right and training for workers to defend themselves.
“Sympathy is no longer enough,” read the statement. “We thank the FBI for getting involved, showing that it cares and supporting reward efforts to help bring those responsible to justice. But federal intervention should not be necessary before our city and state leaders take action.”
UBA urged Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani to respond and acknowledge the violence placing workers at risk.
“How many bodega workers must be shot or killed before they respond? Bodega workers serve New York around the clock, yet the government continues to leave them defenseless,” read the statement.
The organization also called for a meeting with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and legislative action in Albany.
