Theater companies across New York City are coming together once again to celebrate Latinx culture through storytelling, music, dance and more.
It's the 10th annual Teatro Fest, bringing productions to stages across the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens. The festival is organized by the Alliance of Teatros Latinos NY. The festival runs through April 30 and features 24 productions across 10 participating theaters.
"We thought of just getting together to share resources and share ideas," said Rosalba Rolón, artistic director of Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. "And that kept growing and growing until we thought, we happen to have programming at the same time. Why don't we begin to market our programs together?"
That collaboration has created a network of 10 theaters across the city working together to uplift Latinx artists and audiences.
"There's this beautiful exchange of perspectives and ideas and resources that benefits the companies and benefits the audience," said Sándie Luna, executive director of ID Studio Theater in the Bronx.
For the performers themselves, the festival is also an opportunity to connect with audiences through powerful storytelling. Puerto Rican actor Jonathan Hare stars in the play "Petra," one of the productions featured in the festival.
"When you're on stage, you can show truth to yourself that you wouldn't normally show or be vulnerable enough to show to an audience member or a stranger," Hare said. "So it's nice to explore different facets of your own personality."
