Saturday was a day of empowerment for young women of color in the Bronx at a teen leadership summit.
The Casita Maria Center for the Arts and Education hosted its second annual The Future is Femme-inist event celebrating women and femmes of color.
The New York Women's Foundation provided a grant for girls and young women to support the event, which featured keynote speaker Naiomy Guerrero, a writer and founder of Gallery Girl NYC.
The young women participated in workshops on self-defense, standing up against bullying, political storytelling and sexuality and wellness.
Guerrero focused part of her speech on fighting what she calls negative self-talk to overcome doubts about her abilities.
Her advice for the girls is to tell themselves every day that they have what it takes.
