City residents should be preparing for cold weather and a drop in temperature.

The city's heat guidelines state that during the day, if is less than 55 degree outside, it must be at least 68 degrees inside your apartment. They say at night, if the temperature drops below 40 degrees, it needs to be at least 55 degrees inside.

New York City Housing Preservation and Development Chief Inspector Fred Thomasel says residents should talk to their landlord before filing a complaint. He says if that doesn't work, residents should call 311 and file a lack of heat or hot water complaint so an inspector can check out the building. 

"If it's below the required minimum temperature, he's going to issue a citation and he may have to issue an emergency repair order for that same condition," Thomasel says.

Thomasel also advises residents take the temperature on a daily basis with a thermometer and keep track of it.
