When you think New York City, you may not think of horseback riding, but there are many opportunities, including one in the Bronx.
The Bronx Equestrian Center in Pelham Bay Park offers a number of fun and safe activities for the whole family close to home.
The summer riding program is offered for children 6 years old to 17 years old.
"It runs Monday through Friday, 9 to 3, the kids are in the barn hands-on learning, riding. We ride both English, Western," says Susie Gallo, a riding instructor at the Bronx Equestrian Center.
During the program, children learn a wide range of topics in horsemanship including grooming, equipment and stable safety.
"Horses are incredible. They are empathetic, they are intelligent. Having your kids around horses builds confidence and responsibility and good manners," says Gallo.
There are also riding lesson available for ages 5 and up. Their lessons have more guidance on hand with the option of hand-led pony and horse rides.
Hand-led rides are $10 for horses and $5 for ponies and include three times around the arena.
The Bronx Equestrian Center is open seven days a week, and some lessons and rides need an appointment so it is advised to call ahead.
