Landscaper and plant enthusiast Jaleesa Franco is aiming to beautify her community by planting hundreds of sunflower seeds along Castle Hill and Randall avenues.
"I just thought it would be really nice to bring something like that into our neighborhood. We deserve beautiful, so I wanted to bring us beautiful things,” said Franco.
"Just because you live in the projects doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to come out of your house and see beautiful flowers."
She and a group of volunteers came together, first cleaning up litter and then planting the seeds.
This was not the first time she put her green thumb to good use. Last year, she planted tulips and daffodils along Castle Hill Avenue in tribute to victims of the September 11 attacks.
She expects the sunflowers to bloom by October and hopes the community will enjoy them.
