Getting married in New York isn't cheap—and neither is attending or being part of a wedding.
The average wedding costs more than $30,000, but couples tying the knot in the fall could save big.
Spring and summer used to be the go-to seasons, but changing finances are shifting that trend.
Chris, a groom-to-be from Hicksville, said a June wedding would have cost him nearly double.
Venues may offer more than 25% off outside the peak summer season.
Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst at Circana, said venue costs range from $10,000 to $30,000.
"The most expensive part of a wedding is food," Cohen said. "The bar bill is another big one, average is around $10,000 for a wedding."
Flowers can run about $8,000, while photographers and videographers average $5,000 each. Cakes and hair and makeup add another $1,000 each.
Couples can also save by choosing less popular days.
"There's a Thursday, Friday wedding, less expensive than a Saturday night. Sunday weddings, less expensive than Saturday," Cohen said.
Other tips include hiring a DJ instead of a band, sharing flowers or table settings, and opting for a more elaborate cocktail hour instead of a five-course meal.
