You scour the travel sites to get the best deal. First rule - don't prepay. You want to be able to cancel.

Book your car rental as soon as you make your plans, and then recheck it once a week and rebook it whenever the price goes down.

Check off airport agencies. You can save upward of 10%. Even airport cars usually require a shuttle.

When you fill up yourself, you can make sure you get it to the line exactly how you want to do it.

Consider taking a pass on insurance. Often, your credit card insurance has a better policy.

Many car dealers will rent cars for much less per day. You can even try to negotiate the price. But you will have to pay for insurance and the hours may not be as convenient as an agency.
