Human remains found in two Bronx parks led to the arrest of two suspects in the death of 25-year-old Lisa Marie Velasquez.
A city Parks Department worker made the first discovery last Friday. Two bags containing human remains were found near the entrance of Crotona Park. Another set of body parts washed ashore Tuesday night at Barretto Point Park in Hunts Point.
Police on Wednesday confirmed a connection between both discoveries and that the remains belonged to Velasquez.
Jackie Perez says Velasquez, her niece, left her Melrose apartment the evening of Aug. 19 to help a friend in a child custody dispute at a home on Longfellow Avenue. That's where police say they believe Velasquez was beaten to death with a hammer by Daquan Wheeler, who has since been arrested. Ciara Martinez, the friend who Velasquez went to help, was also arrested.
The couple is charged with murder, manslaughter and concealing a corpse.
Family members say they're in the final stages of planning Velasquez's funeral, which will be held next week.
