A town hall hosted for Bronx residents Friday night highlighted issues teens may face in the Bronx.

Underage drinking is the number one problem among the youth in the Longwood and Hunts Point community, according to the Forward South Bronx Coalition.

The nonprofit was initially created to tackle these issues.

With the rise of vaping-related illnesses and deaths across the country, these issues have also come to their attention. Organizers say the goal of the town hall was to educate, empower and take action.

One of the speakers was Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark. He spoke about the negative impact underage drinking has on teens.

The Commanding Officer of the 41st precinct said the NYPD has increased compliance checks, which the nonprofit says has helped tremendously. The coalition is made up of a diverse group of partners in the community from parents to legislators to businesses.

The nonprofit says opioid use was also a big topic of discussion, however it is not what's being primarily used by the youth.

The coalition is not a treatment program but a preventative program, which uses evidence-based initiatives to fight underage drinking.
