Princess Janae Place has become a safe place to come to for the transgender and gender non-conforming community.

It is the first and only community-based housing organization run by trans people for trans people in the city.

Bryan Ellicott has been the program coordinator for the facility for two years, and says it offers housing navigation assistance, support groups, safe sex kits and hygiene kits for people in need.

The facility is in its sixth year of housing LGBTQ people across New York City. Ellicott says the program helps locate apartments through Housing Connect, and if someone is eligible, they assist them with first rent security and deposit.

He says they have been able to assist 150 people with housing during his tenure.

“As a trans man, as a person in a same-sex presenting relationship, pride is about being your authentic self and also celebrating our accomplishments,” Ellicott says. “The things we still need to do in order to go forward because there is still a lot of work to be done.”

They will be hosting Virtual Drag Bingo at the end of June with all money raised going toward the organization’s work.

Pride Month is recognized every year to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which happened in June 1969 in New York City.
