New York City Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers was joined by transit advocates on Monday in demanding increased funding for a program that provides reduced subway and bus rides to low-income residents.
The "Fair Fares" program provides 50% discounts per ride, and Brooks-Powers said that the program needs about $61 million more in funding next year.
The current budget for 2023 is about $75 million for the program, which requires applicants to make less than $14,580 to qualify.
The new initiative would raise that requirement income to just under $29,000.
