The Transportation Security Administration says more people are getting caught with guns at area airports.
The agency says 51 guns were confiscated at New York City area airport checkpoints in 2023.
In 2022, 39 guns were found.
Each of the firearms were discovered by TSA officers during the routine screening of carry-on property at security checkpoints.
The largest amount of guns, 20, were caught at Newark Liberty International Airport followed by John F. Kennedy International Airport.
No guns were found at Stewart International Airport.
In 2023, officers detected 6,737 firearms at 265 airport checkpoints nationwide. In 2022, 6,542 guns were detected.
Of all the guns caught in 2023, 93% of them were loaded.
