‘Turn to Tara’ investigation leads to trafficking bill passing New York Senate

A bill aimed at strengthening enforcement of human trafficking laws has passed the New York State Senate and is now headed to the governor’s desk.
Lawmakers unanimously approved the measure, which would impose financial penalties on hotels and motels that fail to post human trafficking hotline information as required by law.
The legislation was drafted after a News 12 “Turn to Tara” investigation found more than 80% of hotels visited were not following the requirement.
Supporters say the new penalties are designed to give enforcement more impact.
The goal of the law is to better connect trafficking victims with resources and support services.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has previously said she intends to sign the bill into law.
