Two precincts in the Bronx may be overhauled in an effort to reduce gun violence in the precincts' coverage areas.
Police sources tell News 12 The Bronx that the 44th and 46th precincts are being divided and each will have a captain. The precincts will also be given an extra 100 police officers. Although overall crime is down in both precincts, recent NYPD numbers show that in the 44th Precinct 28 more people were shot in 2005 compared to 2004. And in the 46th Precinct police statistics show nine more people were shot in 2005 compared to 2004.
Residents say they don't feel the extra police will help. They say more needs to be done to keep guns from getting into the Bronx. Meanwhile, Mayor Bloomberg says he will work to rid streets of guns and be tough on people who carry and traffic guns.
