Two people were killed and four others were injured during a burst of gunfire Sunday night in Paterson, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

Authorities said police responded to the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue at about 8:26 p.m. on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found six people with gunshot wounds. All six were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.

A 43-year-old Paterson man and a 29-year-old Paterson man were pronounced dead, authorities said. The four remaining victims, all Paterson residents, are in stable condition.

A seventh person left the scene on their own, officials said.

There is no information on the shooter or what led to the incident.

A witness said he heard about 12 gunshots around 8 p.m. and people screaming. He described the moments following the shooting as chaotic, according to an interview with News 12.

Mayor Andre Sayegh released a statement saying in part: “Our goal remains to eradicate gun violence from our community. While we have made meaningful progress, with shootings down 60% over the last two years and gun violence victims down 66%, any act of gun violence is one too many. Our law enforcement agencies are actively investigating, and all available resources are being used to identify those responsible. We will continue working every day toward our goal of zero gun violence.”

This is the second mass shooting in Paterson in the past month. One person was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting in mid-April.
