In Goshen, two men from Newburgh have been indicted after allegedly attacking their attorneys during separate court appearances in Orange County.

The district attorney says 47-year-old Arthur Thomas appeared in court on May 16 in connection with a 2020 murder case. Thomas allegedly attacked his attorney during the proceedings, disrupting the trial and prompting a mistrial. The murder case will be rescheduled for trial at a later date.

Five days later, 33-year-old Donnie Smith appeared in court on attempted murder charges. He is accused of stabbing his mother and another relative 12 times each on Easter last year. Relatives said Smith was upset after being told he couldn’t live with his mother and claimed police had been called to the home the night before. During his court appearance, Smith also allegedly attacked his attorney.

Both men were remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail. Their cases are next scheduled for Tuesday.
