A new study shows many Bronx high school seniors are enlisting in the military instead of going straight to college. The study, conducted by the New York Daily News, found that military recruiters are finding success in recruiting students from large high schools with good school security and average graduation rates. The top school is Christopher Columbus High School, where recruiters convinced 20 students to enlist, the most citywide. Recruiters are also a fixture at DeWitt Clinton High School. Recruiters set up camp in the cafeteria and in hallways. Some school officials say they are opposed to the military presence in schools and advise their students not to talk with the recruiters. Recruiters say this can make their job more difficult and add that they have quotas to meet.
