Capping off a Veterans Day ceremony in Van Nest, officials announced that the 90-year-old war monument there would get a facelift.
"It's going to be a really beautiful plaza for people to come and sit and meditate why we have our freedom," said Bernadette Ferrara, of the Van Nest Neighborhood Alliance.
For the past two years, Ferrara fought to have a flag pole placed next to the monument, which honors Bronx soldiers.
"We are so thankful for council member Ritchie Torres, who put the money for the flag pole, and then parks, who jumped in and partnered to raise money to beautify the whole plaza," she says.
Upgrades will include new gardens and benches throughout the plaza. Veterans are pleased with the news.
"It brings great pride that I served this country," says Robert Hickey, a veteran. "I volunteered to serve, and I was proud to serve, and I'll do it all over again if I could."
