Vice President Mike Pence was vaccinated for the coronavirus Friday as another vaccine is a step closer to being federally approved.

Pence received the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, and the Food and Drug Administration advisory panel approved the emergency use of Moderna's vaccine Thursday.

Pence was vaccinated at Walter Reed Medical Center along with his wife, Karen Pence, and the US surgeon general.

The vice president says that this a truly "medical miracle." He says normally it takes eight to 12 years to go through the process, but he says getting the vaccine out is affirming to the American people that hope is on the way.

The chief medical officer of Moderna says the vaccine platform has safety features, does not use products of animal or human origin and doesn't contain any preservatives or additives. He says this avoids potential concerns that were associated with older vaccine technology.

The Moderna vaccine still needs final approval from the FDA.

Pence says the United States is on track to have 20 million American residents to be vaccinated before the end of December.

President Donald Trump will not get the coronavirus vaccine until it's recommended by the White House medical team.
