Multiple National Guard helicopters landed on a ballfield in Port Morris today.

The helicopters touched down near 23-91 Third Ave.

Citizen video from around 8 a.m. shows the helicopters hovering over the area.

More footage from minutes later shows a large group of military personnel moving quickly across the field.

The mayor's office tells News 12 the helicopters were from the National Guard and in response to the corrections officers' strike and protest.

The New York State Department of Corrections said that Gov. Kathy Hochul had signed an executive order this week authorizing the National Guard to be deployed to ensure safety at correctional facilities across the state.

Residents tell News 12 they were alarmed by the presence of the choppers, particularly given recent plane crashes around the country. They add if the helicopters were part of a routine drill, then neighbors should be notified in advance to avoid panic.
