Two days after 23-year-old Nathalie Ramirez and her 8-month-old daughter were allegedly pushed off their 15th-floor balcony by the baby's father, killing Ramirez, a vigil was held to instead send balloons back up.
Some got stuck in the tree on the way, leaving some in attendance to say those were Ramirez - sticking around and watching over them.
"It's so surreal honestly, like, she was just here," said Lisi Soto, who went to high school with Ramirez, but admits she had lost touch. "She was probably suffering in silence and nobody knew. I wish I would have known that she lived 10 minutes away from me. I would have definitely helped her."
Others there said they did not know Hernandez previously, but were victims of domestic violence themselves, and said they felt the pain as if they did know her.
"I haven't even slept in two days, because it was so close to home," said Alyn Restituyo, who lives in the area and organized the vigil.
The balloon release came just hours after Angel Carrasco, the man police allege pushed Ramirez and the child they shared together, was seen walking out of a police station laughing and smiling.
"He's a monster," said Soto. "I know that justice will be served both by god and by the government."
While police tell us the eight-month-old baby Hernandez had wrapped in her arms as she fell is in stable condition, family members tell us off camera that she is still in the hospital.
