A community gathered Friday to mourn 16-year-old Nayshawn Campbell, whose death is just one of several happening in the wake of gun violence skyrocketing across the city.

The mother of Campbell tells News 12 her son was not the intended target of a shooting that happened on Sutter Avenue and Osbourne Street this past Saturday.

Today, she, along with other family and friends, held a vigil to remember his life. His family says that he enjoyed playing basketball and one day hoped to become an engineer.

According to officials, Campbell was coming from a party with his cousin when those shots rang out around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Police are still searching for a suspect.

There were two shootings in Brooklyn on Thursday: one in Starrett City where a 23-year-old was injured, and another in Crown Heights where a woman was taken to a hospital for her injuries.

Police are still investigating the deadly shooting of a 20-year-old mother on the Upper East Side that took place Wednesday.

The vigil for Campbell took place at at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Boys and Girls Club where he attended in downtown Brooklyn.
