A New York man is facing dozens of charges in two break-ins at Stamford storage facilities where close to 50 guns and $200,000 were stolen, according to an arrest warrant.
Joshua Casiano, 35, of Bronx, N.Y., was arraigned this week in the crimes, which happened just days apart last year.
Casiano's arrest warrant said the first occurred on Feb. 18, 2024, at Extra Space Storage on West Main Street. Three days later, he allegedly hit the the CubeSmart on Shippan Avenue. The crimes targeted units that belonged to the same local man, according to the warrant. Casiano got away with 47 handguns and between $160,000 and $200,000 in cash, the warrant said. Stamford police began investigating after the victim was notified by CubeSmart staff that his unit there had been "kicked in or pried open." A check of his other storage unit a few miles away found the same thing, the warrant said. Police used surveillance footage from both businesses and the surrounding areas to identify Casiano and a Dodge Durango used in the break-ins, according to the warrant. Casiano was allegedly seen on camera in both leaving the facilities with duffle bags believed to be full of guns and cash. A second suspect was seen with him at CubeSmart, the warrant stated. Police said detectives with the department's Property Crimes Unit worked with the FBI and NYPD to take Casiano into custody in New York City. A later search of his home turned up several stolen handguns and other evidence linking him to the crimes, according to police.
Casiano's warrant said he's a gang member with "a lengthy criminal history in New York from 2006 to 2021, with charges ranging from disorderly conduct to robbery 2nd and sex abuse of a victim under 13."
Casiano was extradited to Stamford on Monday, where he was charged with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, two counts of third-degree burglary and 47 counts of stealing a firearm. At his arraignment, the judge lowered his bond from $1 million to $250,000, but Casiano was still in custody Wednesday.
"The Stamford Police Department commends the diligent work of its investigators and the cooperation of federal and local law enforcement agencies in ensuring that those responsible for serious crimes are brought to justice," Capt. Thomas Scanlon said in a statement.
Police ask anyone with additional information in the case to contact the Sgt. Rosa with the Stamford Police Property Crimes Unit at 203-977-5828.
