There were some tough words from Mayor Bill de Blasio during a news conference Thursday, as he responded to threats made by President Donald Trump to defund New York City.
The mayor said in response to President Trump that the president has failed New York City and is now trying to punish the city.
"You failed us and now you want to punish us. It makes no sense, by the way your words don't carry much weight on this topic because the Supreme Court has spoken, presidents of the United States can't interfere with federal funding for cities, states just because he feels like it,” says Mayor de Blasio.
It was all in response to reports that the president ordered the federal government to defund New York City and three other democratic cities, claiming officials allowed "lawless" protests in those cities and cut police budgets amid rising violent crime.
Trump signed a five-page memo demanding reports be sent to the White House detailing funds that can be redirected.
The other cities include Washington, D.C., Seattle and Portland.
