Sinkhole repaired, traffic eases as one lane reopens on busy Yonkers roadway

Traffic is flowing a little better in Yonkers after crews repaired a water main break that caused a sinkhole and major traffic delays.
One southbound lane of Central Park Avenue has reopened at the intersection of Yonkers Avenue after the sinkhole opened Tuesday afternoon. The sinkhole was caused by a water main break that forced the closure of southbound lanes between Yonkers Avenue and Boone Street while crews worked to make repairs.

Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier said the water main was repaired later Tuesday and water service has been restored to all residents. He said crews were able to backfill the hole with concrete Wednesday and are continuing work to fully restore the roadway.
The repair process took longer because a Con Edison gas line is installed directly above the damaged water main, according to Meier.
Crews plan to apply a binder coat of asphalt Thursday and a final layer of asphalt Friday. Officials expect the roadway to fully reopen before the Friday morning rush hour.
"This morning, we were able to backfill the hole with concrete; the concrete has to cure for at least a day. Tomorrow, we'll put what's called a binder coat, which is thicker layer of asphalt; and then on Friday, we'll do the final layer of asphalt and the road will be opened up," Meier said.
Drivers can once again travel through part of the area, but officials urge motorists to slow down and use caution while resurfacing work continues.
